Our cardboard box is a practical, eco-friendly, and effective container for composting, helping with moisture control and aeration, while contributing to the overall composting process.
Aeration is a crucial part of the composting process. Place the Ceres Simple box on the wooden stand to provide optimal airflow around and under the box.
Food waste needs to stay moist to break down. Your kit includes a cloth cover with an elastic cord to help maintain the ideal moisture level.
Coconut coir, a natural fiber from coconut husks, helps improve airflow, boost moisture retention, reduce odors, and balance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio for optimal composting.
Biochar enhances the composting process by improving aeration, balancing the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (since biochar is carbon-rich), retaining moisture, and supporting the growth of beneficial microbes.
A handy tool to stir things up.
First things first, it’s time to assemble your kit! Simply unpack the box, set the wooden stand into place, and set the cardboard box on top.
Next, hydrate the coconut coir separately in a bucket. Then, add the coir and biochar substrate to the Ceres Simple box and give things a stir with the provided garden spade.
Dig a hole in the center of the substrate, add your food scraps, and cover. Each time you add food scraps, you’ll want to add a small amount of water to help things break down.
That’s it! Continue adding food waste and stir to keep things aerated. Within a number of months, you’ll have nutrient-rich compost or “black gold.”
Grass clippings, plant trimmings, and brown materials such as paper, paper towels, and napkins all help to balance moisture and carbon levels for effective decomposition.
Food waste including coffee grounds, tea bags, cooked rice, pasta, oats , stale bread, tortilla scraps, beans, corn cobs, and egg shells add essential nutrients for healthy compost.
Fruit and veggie scraps, peels, and stems are ideal additions to your Ceres Simple box. These nutrient-rich materials break down easily and help to create a balanced compost mix.
Manmade materials such as metal or plastic will not breakdown in compost and should be avoided.
Do not add any pet waste to Ceres Simple as it can contain harmful pathogens.
Avoid foods such as chocolate, candy, chips, or junk food as these items can disrupt the composting process.
Don’t add dairy products, meat, or fish scraps as these can create odors and upset the balance of your compost.
With a career rooted in green building and sustainable design, Ceres Founder Peter Doo channeled his passion for the environment into creating convenient composting solutions that empower anyone to transform food waste into nutrient-rich soil.
Of the nearly 30 million tons of annual food waste generated in the US, 60% comes from households. Composting helps divert this waste from landfills while creating a valuable soil amendment. Less waste and fewer greenhouse gases!
Composting can save you money on fertilizers, soil amendments, and even trash bags. Plus, by reducing the amount of waste you send to landfills, you can lower your waste disposal costs (including compost pickup subscriptions)!
Compost is packed with nutrients that improve soil health. Studies show that using compost as a soil amendment can increase soil water retention by up to 30%. Composting also increases soil biodiversity by promoting beneficial microorganisms, which helps plants grow healthier.
When organic waste breaks down in landfills, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. If 50% of U.S. food waste were composted, it could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 13.3 million metric tons of CO2-equivalent each year—equivalent to taking 2.6 million cars off the road for a year.
